Wild & Free - Road Tripping Up The Wild Coast
South Africa
The Transkei
The Transkei is a region of raw beauty, rich culture, and unspoiled landscapes. Known as the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, this area is a captivating blend of rolling green hills, rugged coastlines, and traditional Xhosa villages.
The Wild Coast, as it’s often called, is a surfer’s paradise, offering world-class breaks like Coffee Bay and Mdumbi, where waves crash against dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches. Beyond surfing, the Transkei is a haven for hikers, with trails leading to iconic landmarks such as the Hole in the Wall, a natural rock arch shaped by centuries of wind and waves.
The region’s cultural heritage is equally compelling. Visitors can immerse themselves in Xhosa traditions, from sampling umqombothi (traditional beer) to joining in vibrant drumming sessions. The Transkei’s slow pace of life and warm hospitality make it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Hazards
Cliffs, sharks, vehicle trouble, remote, rocks, strong currents (if you're not experieced and paddle fit, it's advised to surf at beginner spots to develop your fitness) - slow medical evacuation.
Destination 1 - Arniston
Arniston is a picturesque fishing village known for its whitewashed cottages and turquoise waters. It’s a peaceful spot with beginner-friendly surf breaks and beautiful scenery. Check out the Waenhuiskrans Cave, a massive sea cave accessible at low tide, or enjoy fresh seafood at a local eatery.
Destination 2 - Stilbaai
Stilbaai, or "Still Bay," is a tranquil coastal town with a relaxed vibe. It’s perfect for surfers looking for uncrowded waves at spots like Lappiesbaai. The town also offers epic tidal pools, hiking trails, and a chance to explore the Goukou River by canoe.
Stilbaai Point break can get big and is lots of fun, but the rip can also get insane and the paddle out from the rocks is slightly terrifying. It's say it's an advanced spot, and down the coast is more beginner-friendly and ideal for longboarding.
Really fun waves make it an all-round adventurous surf.
Destination 3 - Vic Bay
Victoria Bay, near George, is a pretty sweet surf spot. This small, sheltered cove sets up a consistent right-hand point break that attracts surfers of all levels. The intimate beach and lush surroundings make it a good spot to unwind and enjoy the waves.
Destination 4 - Plettenberg Bay
Plettenberg Bay, or "Plett," is a vibrant coastal town with good-looking beaches and a lively atmosphere. Surfers can enjoy breaks like Central Beach or The Wedge, while nature lovers can hike the Robberg Nature Reserve or visit the nearby Monkeyland and Birds of Eden sanctuaries. There's been numerous shark attacks in Plett, so it's probably one to skip if it's not firing. Even then, it's probably not worth it.
Destination 5 - JBay
Jeffreys Bay, or "J-Bay," is a world-renowned surfing destination, home to the legendary Supertubes break. This laid-back town is a surfer’s paradise, offering perfect waves, a vibrant surf culture, and plenty of budget-friendly accommodations. Check out the J-Bay Surf Museum and stock up on surf gear at local shops.
